Overview


Reolink cameras support both RTSP (Real-Time Streaming Protocol) and ONVIF for integration with third-party monitoring systems. However, newer Reolink models with Smart Detection features have RTSP disabled by default and require manual activation.

This guide covers the complete setup process for enabling RTSP, configuring ONVIF, and managing authentication credentials for Reolink cameras to work with AegisGates AI monitoring and other third-party platforms.

Step 1: Access Camera Settings


You can configure your Reolink camera through three methods. Choose the one that's most convenient for your setup:

Option A: Via Reolink App (Mobile)

  • Open the Reolink app and tap on your camera
  • Tap the device model box at the top of the screen
  • Navigate to Advanced Network SettingsServer Settings

Option B: Via Web Browser (Recommended)

  • Find your camera's IP address (check your router's connected devices or use the Reolink app)
  • Open a web browser and navigate to the camera's IP address (e.g., http://192.168.1.100)
  • Log in with your camera credentials
  • Click the gear icon (⚙️) in the top-right corner
  • Go to NetworkAdvancedServer SettingsSet Up

Option C: Via Reolink Client (Desktop Software)

  • Launch the Reolink Client software on your computer

Step 2: Enable RTSP Port

Important: For newer Reolink models with Smart Detection (Person/Vehicle/Pet detection), RTSP is *disabled by default*. You must manually enable it.

Configuration Steps:

  • In the Server Settings page, locate the RTSP section
  • Check the box next to RTSP to enable it
  • Verify the RTSP port (default is 554)
* You can change this if needed (valid range: 1-65535) * Note: Most systems expect port 554, so only change if you have a specific reason

Note for older models: Some Reolink models without Smart Detection have RTSP enabled permanently and don't show a checkbox — the port is always active.

Step 3: Enable ONVIF Port (Recommended)


Enabling ONVIF provides better compatibility with third-party systems like AegisGates. ONVIF allows automatic stream discovery, reducing manual configuration errors.

Configuration Steps:

  • In the same Server Settings page, locate the ONVIF section
  • Check the box next to ONVIF to enable it
  • Verify the ONVIF port (default is 8000)
* You can customize this port if needed (range: 1-65535)
  • Click Save or Apply
Step 4: Note Your Camera Credentials

You'll need these details to connect your camera to AegisGates or other monitoring systems:

Step 5: Optional — Disable Login Lockout


Some Reolink models have an "Illegal Login Lockout" feature that blocks access after multiple failed login attempts. If you're troubleshooting connection issues or testing different credentials, you may want to temporarily disable this:

  • Go to camera SettingsSystemUser Management
  • Find Illegal Login Lockout
  • Toggle it OFF
Security Note: Re-enable this feature after setup is complete to protect against brute-force attacks.

Network Considerations


Same Network Setup (Recommended):

For best performance and security, keep your camera and AegisGates server on the same local network. Direct network connection won't work (plugging camera directly into NVR/server) — both devices must be connected through your network switch or router.

Remote Network Setup:

If your camera is on a different network (e.g., remote location), you'll need to set up port forwarding on your router:

  • Forward external port → internal camera IP:554 (RTSP)
  • Forward external port → internal camera IP:8000 (ONVIF)
  • Security Warning: Exposing RTSP ports to the internet is risky. Use a VPN (Tailscale, WireGuard) instead for secure remote access.

Troubleshooting Common Issues


Camera Not Detected via ONVIF:

  • Verify ONVIF is enabled in camera settings
  • Check that port 8000 isn't blocked by firewall
  • Ensure camera firmware is up to date (visit Reolink Download Center)

RTSP Stream Freezes or Drops:

  • Use sub-stream instead of main stream for AI monitoring (lower bandwidth, more stable)
  • Check network bandwidth and WiFi signal strength
  • Reduce camera frame rate (15 fps is sufficient for AI analysis)

Authentication Errors:

  • Verify username/password are correct
  • Check if "Illegal Login Lockout" has blocked your IP (wait 30 minutes or reset camera)
  • Try accessing camera via web browser to confirm credentials work
Model-Specific Notes

Battery-Powered Models:

⚠️ RTSP is NOT supported on Reolink battery-powered cameras (Argus series, etc.). These models use proprietary cloud streaming only. For home security, consider wired PoE cameras instead — see our home security camera placement guide.

Models E1/Lumus:

⚠️ Do not support RTSP, HTTP, HTTPS, ONVIF ports. Not compatible with third-party monitoring.

Cameras Connected to Reolink NVR:

When cameras are added to a Reolink NVR or Home Hub, configure ports through the NVR interface, *not* the camera's settings page.

Security Best Practices


  • Use strong passwords — avoid default passwords like "admin" or "12345"
  • Change default ports if cameras are internet-exposed
  • Enable Login Lockout after testing is complete
  • Use VPN for remote access instead of port forwarding
  • Keep firmware updated — Reolink releases security patches regularly
  • Separate camera network — use VLAN to isolate cameras from main network (advanced)
